As some of you may know, I am a concert junkie haha. I can’t even count how many concerts I’ve been to in my lifetime! But I love listening to live music and seeing the visuals the artist thought of or were thinking about when they created their music. This past year, I went to too many concerts and shows (as usual haha), so I decided to make a list of my top 5 favorite performances from 2018!
(Side note: They will not be in any order because that’s just too hard and I won’t do it haha)
I’ll start with this concert since it’s the most recent one I went to lol. So over the past year and a half I’ve been trying to see H.E.R. in concert.
If you don’t know who she is, let me put you on real quick.
You’re welcome 😉
I actually saw her perform back in June 2017 at the BET Experience but it was very brief so I don’t count it haha. But ever since that show I felt like she was low key dodging me, like personally me lol. I say this because I was supposed to go to a Bryson Tiller concert, which she was opening, and the show happened to get cancelled. Then this past summer, she was also supposed to open up for Chris Brown but she didn’t show up. (She was performing at the BET Awards, but still, I felt a way) So when it was announced that she was doing a show in Arizona (FINALLY) I had to go.
Her show (haha) was everythinggggg. It was honestly one of the best shows I had ever been to. She didn’t put on this huge performance with tons of visuals and extra gimmicks. The venue was very intimate and it was nice seeing her on stage with just two background singers putting her everything into her music. She also played the piano, guitar, bass, and drums during the show (the talent, I’m telling you). I was in the pit as well, so being close to everything made the show that more intimate. I love when you go to a show and you don’t realize how much you appreciate an artist until you see them live, and that happened for me during this concert.
This past year, I actually went to two Miguel shows. The first was at Coachella and then a concert in Arizona. However, the Coachella show was faaaar better than his tour show for many reasons.
- The audience for the AZ show was NOT it. It seemed like most of the people didn’t even know his songs, except the hits, and it felt like Miguel could tell too.
- There was one point where Miguel was asking the crowd to sing the lyrics back to him and I swear it felt like my sister and I were the only ones singing in the audience.
- The people around me weren’t into the show AT ALL and there was even a couple next to me that kept making out during the whole show. They literally paid to make out at a Miguel show essentially smh.
- It was also VERY hot at the venue since it was outside.
But yea anyway that show just wasn’t the greatest 😐
Miguel’s performance at Coachella was completely different from that experience, which I know it should be since it was COACHELLA but still lol.
So my sister is actually a big fan of Miguel. I however am not, BUT I still really enjoy his music. She was most excited to see him at Coachella (besides Beyonce, but I’ll get to that later 🐝).
The crowd was sooo hype during his performance and the people who we were around us were also big fans of Miguel. They were singing every word to his songs and dancing their hearts out. My sister was also getting her life lol. Overall, I would say it was one of the funnest shows I’ve been to. The energy there was amazing!
Another person I had been dying to see in concert for a while was Daniel Caesar. I actually ended up seeing him twice as well in 2018, the other time being Coachella. I ended up missing half of his set at Coachella though so I’m glad I was able to see him again.
When I tell you the venue for his show was PACKED, it was packed packed lol. I made the huge mistake of buying my ticket last minute so I had to pick it up at the box office. Welllll, I guess everyone did the same thing as me because the line was wrapped around the building. I ended up missing the openers for the show (one of which was Kiana Lede, who I hope to finally see in concert this year 🤞🏾). But I was able to make it into the venue before he went on.
This show was at the same venue as the H.E.R. concert, so it was also a very intimate performance. Hearing him sing his Freudian album live…. I was literally like this 😧 the whole time lol. The crowd was hype too which made the show that more enjoyable. He’s definitely someone I would want to see again!
Before going to this concert, I hadn’t listened to a lot of music by Jorja Smith. I listened to her Lost and Found album a couple of times but not heavily. However, I was still very excited for this show. Even though I didn’t know her music that well, I could still vibe to it.
When I tell you this girl sounded EXACTLY like she does on her album (which artists should haha) it sounded like I was listening to the actual recording. She also didn’t talk that much in between her songs. When she did it was very fast and the whole audience would be like HUH!? 😂. Idk if it was because of her accent or if she had been drinking before she went on stage, but it made her very personable because she was even laughing at herself haha.
Watching her perform was mesmerizing! Her voice was so precise and soothing and the audience was taken in with every song. I was also standing next to some STANS (If you haven’t noticed by now, I love people watching 👀😂). It made the show that more enjoyable for me because watching them have the time of their lives was hilariously great. They knew every lyric to every song, and they would be the first ones to cheer and applaud after a song was finished.
Overall, her show was great! If you haven’t seen her perform live, or haven’t even listened to her songs, I would defffff recommend doing both.
Like many of the artists on this list, I got to witness the greatness of Queen B not once but TWICE in 2018. The first time I saw Beyonce was during her ICONIC performance at Weekend 2 of Coachella, and the next was at her On The Run II Tour. Both performances were jaw dropping but I’m going to focus on her Coachella performance since that was the first time I saw her live.
So the whole reason I decided to go to Coachella was to see Beyonce haha. Don’t get me wrong, there were definitely other artists I was excited to see but… BEYONCE 😂. I hadn’t watched the live stream of her performance from Weekend 1 because I wanted to witness everything first hand and I didn’t want to anticipate each song she was going to perform. My sister, however, had watched the live stream and was prepared for the whole show. She even learned some of the choreography lol.
If anyone reading this has been to Coachella, then you know how exhausting the weekend is. I actually ended up passing out right before Beyonce’s set because of how tired I was. Thankfully my friend, Afiya, came through with a few Red Bulls to wake me up lol.
Before the show, we ended up making friends with the people around us obviously by bonding over our love for the Queen B. I can’t even describe to you what it felt like witnessing this performance. It almost felt like I was in a dream like state. Everything felt so surreal. I was literally seeing Beyonce in the flesh with my own two eyes and I couldn’t believe it (I know I sound crazy but you need to see this women perform live to understand the feeling I’m describing lol).
From the FITS, to the BAND, to the CHOREO, the SET LIST, the SPECIAL GUESTS, the DESTINY’S CHILD REUNION…. it was mind blowing 🤯. After the performance was over, we all just stood there in awe because we couldn’t believe what we had witnessed. We were standing there so long, the security guards had to tell us to leave 😂.
This was undoubtedly the best show I had ever gone to. If you EVER get the chance or have been thinking about going to a Beyonce show, GO! You won’t regret it!
2018 was full of great concerts and performances that I won’t forget! I already have a few shows lined up for 2019 that I’m excited for 😆. I can’t wait to see more great artists and make even more unforgettable memories! If anyone is looking for a concert buddy, you know I’m always down 😉.
